DLSU’s Angel Canino raring to form partnership with Jia De Guzman in AVC stint

MANILA, Philippines – Sasalang ang higit sa 500 swimmers sa Congress of the Philippine Aquatics (COPA) National Capital Region “One For All-All-For One” Championships ngayong linggo sa Teofilo Ildefonso Swimming Center sa Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RSMC) sa Malate, Maynila.

“This is part of a series of COPA competitions aimed at fostering camaraderie and boosting the swimmer’s development at the grassroots level. But of course, expect tough competition as some of our Palarong Pambansa qualifiers are confirmed to join the event,” ani Batangas 1st District Rep. Sinabi ni COPA co-founder Chito Rivera na libre ang mga koponan at estudyante mula sa mga pampublikong paaralan sa tatlong araw na tournament na magsisilbi ring fund-raising event dahil bahagi ng mga kikitain ay mapupunta sa pamilya ng yumaong swimming coach na si Elcid Evangelista.

Ang age- group competitions ay para sa mga lalaki at babae 6-under, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 at 18-year-old pataas.

“Also, this will serve as part of our young swimmers’ preparation for the coming National tryouts on August 15-18 to select members of the team for the Southeast Asian Age Group SEA Age Group Championship slated in Bangkok in December,” dagdag ni Buhain, ang swimming icon at Philippine Sports Hall-of-Famer.

Kabilang sa mga lalangoy ay sina Palarong Pambansa-bound Nicola Diamante ng RSS Dolphins sa Parañaque, Asian Age-Group Championships campaigner Patri cia Mae Santor ng University of Santo Tomas.

Lalahok din sina Rio Balbuena, Jada Cruz, Amber Arano, Kristoffe David at Audrina Victor ng Ilustre East Swimming Club na nasa pangangasiwa ni national coach Ramil Ilustre.

Samantala, ipinaalala ni Rivera na ang mga pisikal na sasabak sa PAI tryouts para sa 25-meter competition sa Agosto 19-21 ay magiging karapat-dapat na kumatawan sa bansa sa apat na international tournaments:

Ang mga ito ay ang World Cup sa Shanghai, China (Oktubre 18-20), Korea World Cup sa Incheon (Oktubre 24-26), Singapore World Cup (Oktubre 31- Nobyembre 2) at ang World Championships sa Budapest, Hungary (Disyembre 10-15).

Ngayong buwan lang nang ibunyag ni Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian na nakarehistro sa pangalan ni Guo ang metro ng kuryente ng Zuan Yuan Technology Inc. Ilang araw pa lang ang nakakalipas nang magbabala si Gatchalian sa posibilidad ng “POGO-politics” sa bansa.

Dalawang araw pa lang ang nakalilipas nang mapilitang magpaliwanag si Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Garcia kung bakit nila tinanggap ang certificate of candidacy (COC) ni Guo noong 2022 national elections sa gitna ng kwestyon sa kanyang pagkatao.

MANILA, Philippines – Former UAAP rookie-Most Valuable Player Angel Canino has a lot to be excited about following her first call-up to the women’s senior national team for the upcoming 2024 AVC Challenge Cup slated next week here in Manila.

Canino, who joins fellow DLSU Lady Spikers Thea Gagate and Juju Coronel in Alas Pilipinas’ latest pool, was especially excited by the prospect of linking up with eight-time PVL Best Setter Jia Morado-De Guzman in training and in-game.

Familiar with the former Ateneo star’s caliber, Canino gushed over getting to play with her senior in the international stage.

“I’m really looking forward na maging setter si Ate Jia kasi before, parang nakikita ko lang po siyang nagse-set. Sobrang ganda niya talaga. I mean, meron talaga siyang connection with each and every one sa loob,” Canino told the media on Wednesday afternoon. 

“Yun yung pinaka-nagagandahan ako. You know, makikita mo yung maturity niya inside. Makikita mo yung leadership niya kaya gusto ko rin siyang makasama kaya nilu-look forward ko,” she added.

Canino also made special mention of her collegiate rivals who were also called up to the national team pool, including newly named UAAP Season 86 MVP Bella Belen.

After years of playing against each other, the UAAP champion looks forward to being on the same side of the net.

“Also, nilu-look forward ko rin sina Casiey Dongallo, Bella Belen, ate Aly Solomon, kasi siyempre, magkalaban kami sa UAAP eh, so I really look forward na makalaro siya sa national team natin,” she said.

The collegiate stars reinforce a freshly formed pool flanked by PVL stars such as the likes of Morado-De Guzman, Dawn Macandili-Catindig, Sisi Rondina, Eya Laure and Jennifer Nierva.

Alas Pilipinas will begin their campaign in the AVC Challenge Cup by May 22, playing against Iran, they will also be facing Chinese Taipei, India and Australia in Pool A action.

The team hopes to improve on the Philippines’ seventh-place finish last year.
